Dear Students,

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español! I am very excited to start this new program with you to explore the basics of the Spanish language and introduce you to the richness of the variety of cultures where Spanish is spoken throughout the world. The objective of this class is that once completed you will have achieved the level of high beginner assessed through the ACTFL oral proficiency guidelines. Above all, my wish is that you will become resourceful and confident language learners motivated to continue on improving your skills through future study and perhaps travel. To achieve this, we will work daily to create and immerse ourselves in a "Spanish" classroom where Spanish is the main language of communication. We will study grammar and vocabulary through exploring various themes and develop a strong foundation across the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing with an emphasis on communication. The idea is that the class will be highly interactive and fun! What I need from you is your active participation and a willingness to make mistakes and take risks while speaking Spanish. This will not only make a tremendous difference in your progress but also in that of your classmates.

Materials

Our new textbook for this course is called ¡Avancemos! which is loaded with fun activities and access to videos, listening files, music, grammar reviews and much more. These books are costly ($54.95) and you are responsible for taking good care of them so we can pass them on to future students. Please do not write in them and bring them to class every day. If you do lose your book ,you will be asked to replace it so guard it well! I will also provide you with lots of handouts and we will use the internet often to listen to native speakers and research projects on culture. You will not need a dictionary to do homework or participate in class. Nevertheless, we will have some available in the library or you may use www.wordreference.com. online for projects or other research.

Homework

There will be required homework assigned with the idea of practicing and extending class work. Homework assignments will be posted on the blog as well as given out in class. At times, it will be review of what we covered in class and other times it will be writing, reading or practice exercises. We will also do some long term group cultural projects which could end with presentations. Homework should not take more that 15 to 20 minutes a night.

EVALUATION
Your grade for this class will be based on participation, homework completion, tests, quizzes and projects. We will also have some oral evaluations to see how well you are progressing in communication. Please feel free to talk to me before or after class if you have any questions or concerns or feel you need extra help. Because every class builds on a previous class, it is really important you don't wait if you are feeling lost.
I'm really looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you and having a wonderful time learning Spanish this year.
¡Qué tengan un buen semestre!
